The shooting at NIU (Northern Illinois University) leaves many families devastated. Imagine, sending your kid off to College only to hear that he/she has been murdered in cold blood. What is this world coming to. I have both secular and spiritual insights and answers to why this happened and how to prevent it in the future.
Secular:
First, I would start by using metal detectors and fences around the whole college area.
Second, these colleges need to hire 10x more armed and trained police officers. I would also arm all the teachers (those that want to carry guns can) and I would train and arm a certain percentage of the Student population as well. In every class there needs to be at least 1 person in the classroom that is trained, armed, and ready for something like this to happen.
Spirtual:
The reason why people do things like this is because mankind is evil. That's right, the Bible says in Jeremiah 17:9 "The Heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it. And in Romans 3:10,11 "There is none righteousness, no not one; There is none who understands: There is none who seeks after God."
The Public Universities have altogether KICKED GOD OUT. They teach that we evolved from Monkeys, instead of the FACT that we have been fearfully and wonderfully CREATED in GOD'S IMAGE. Therefore, since God has been kicked out, the door is wide open for the devil (who hates us) to come right in. Make no mistake about it, this gunman was influenced by Evil Spirits. There is a whole spiritual realm just as real as the physical realm. Without the Lord Jesus' Protection, Satan can do what he wants to. And make no mistake about it. SATAN HATES US!
Here is the GOOD NEWS.
God Created us. God Loves us. We have sinned from the beginning of time. However, God loves us so much that he came down from Heaven in the form of a man (Jesus Christ). He died on the cross and shed his blood for us, for our sins. Then Jesus rose from the grave 3 days later and lives today. Someday Jesus will come back to bring us to Heaven to live with him in Paradise Forever for all Eternity. The Bible states clearly in Romans 10:9 that if you Confess with your mouth that JESUS IS LORD, and Believe in your Heart that God raised Him from the Dead, YOU WILL BE SAVED.
So if Public Colleges and Universities as well as Public Elementary, Middle, and High Schools were to Embrace God rather than disdain and shun God, they would have God's Divine Protection.
It really is that simple. Embrace and Trust God=Protection and Health
Hate and Disdain God=Destruction and Calamity
Will people NOW trust God. I hope and pray that they do.

Dylan, yes innocent people do die. However the point I am making is that AS A WHOLE Universities have REJECTED GOD and Laughed at Him. Therefore, they cannot expect God's divine protection. Throughout history, those who have embraced the God of the Bible (Jesus), have His divine protection around them, and ONLY God can take that hedge of protection away.
Here are some of the MANY verses in the Bible of God's divine protection:
The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. Prov 18:10
The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. Psalm 34:7
For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars. 2 Chron 16:9
The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and they coming in from this time forth, and even for ever more. Psalm 121:7,8.
When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. Prov 3:24
And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? 1 Peter 3:13
...The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by him; and the Lord shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders. Deut 33:12.
Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. Psalm 91:9,10
But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil. Prov 1:33.
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8.
So you see that this divine protection is on those that fear the Lord. You made the statement that "There are millions of examples throughout history of innocent slaughter, including slaughter, disease, famine, etc. of those that fully embrace God.
Really, where?? Did these people as a whole REALLY Embrace God, the God of the Bible-Jesus Christ? Or did they embrace Allah as God?
Now there is an example of Job in the Bible who was following after God and in this specific case God allowed Satan to attack him, BUT in the end God blessed Job and made him even richer than before the calamity came upon him.
God's protection on the righteous (not righteous in themselves but righteous because they put their trust in God/Jesus) is ALL over Scripture and History.
I am sure there are many things that could have happenend to me that didn't because I put my faith and trust in Jesus.
And those in history that did fully embrace God and got killed NOW are in a MUCH MUCH better place (Heaven). These are called Martyers.
I am talking as a whole though. As a whole Universities have shunned God. I believe that if they had the opposite attitude and welcomed God, His divine protection would be applied (as a whole)generally.
